Shaving Cream and Mirror Play

If you are looking for a simple play idea it really can't get much simpler than this! All you need is a mirror and shaving cream. Something I would guess would already be in the majority of your houses!

We did this inside as it was a wet and horrid day outside, so we used our messy mat which is really just an old quilt cover but it does the trick perfectly. Preferably I would do this activity outside in the sunshine, I think it would make the mirror play even more exciting by reflecting beautiful blue skies! Perhaps we will just have to do this again in the summer!

You could use a big mirror like we have, a smaller hand held mirror or even the mirror doors on your wardrobe if you are feeling brave enough! If you don't have a suitable mirror to use children will love exploring shaving cream just as much on a tray or plastic table top. A little bit of shaving cream goes a long way and we could have used even less than we did so start small and work your way up to more if you need it!

I suggest starting the experience with just the shaving cream. It's fun to squish, spread out and make marks in it with your fingers. My boy then choose to get his cars and drive them through it, your child might have something they would like to add to it and I say if you are comfortable cleaning it then go with it!

Of course by using glass mirrors you do need to be aware of the safety aspect and supervise with 100% of your attention to make sure there is no banging of objects against the mirror. Alternatively if you have a safety mirror, such as the ones you can buy in the children's section of IKEA you could allow a little more independence in their play.

Does your child love looking at themselves in the mirror as much as mine does? They are sure to LOVE this activity if they do!!

  1. My son did exactly the same when I got the shaving foam out - he went straight for his cars. It must be an inbuilt desire to make car tracks in shaving foam!
