Rainbow Rice and Playdough

This was a very quick and easy play experience that I put together on the spur of the moment. We already had a container of rainbow rice and the playdough as well had been sitting on our shelf for a while. By simply combining the two there was a new spark of interest for my boy to explore them again.

I always play with rainbow rice outside, it's just my way of allowing the exploration to get messy without me getting stressed. With my boy the fact that it will be thrown out of the container at some point is inevitable. Your child though may be different and you could feel more comfortable playing with it inside!

Adding the playdough to the rainbow rice turned out to be a good way to explore 'sticky'. Wherever the playdough touched the rice it stuck to it and is quite an interesting phenomenon for a toddler to explore! It also provided some great fine motor skill practice as he tried to pick some of the rice back off the playdough.

Of course the most fun to be had was by throwing the balls of playdough into the rice!!

In the end we still had a lot of rainbow rice to play with for another day and we had a big ball of mixed up coloured playdough and rice. It gave the playdough a very interesting texture when it was all combined and mixed through, so we kept that too to explore again in the future!

I love that the simplest of things can provide the best play experiences and often try to think of new ways to present already played with activities. You don't need a lot to keep a toddler entertained, just think outside the box a little, look around at what you already have and make a few surprising combinations!

Happy Playing!
